Diversity and Identity
Identities provide a lens to make sense of the world. Identities are not fixed markers — choices that feel right in one situation do not necessarily feel the same in another situation.
What are we doing about it?
The College of Education:
- Recruits and retains faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds, particularly those who are underrepresented to ensure equitable opportunities for all
- Develops and implements strategies that leverage our Hispanic Serving Institution status in faculty and staff recruitment
- Includes welcoming and supportive statements, illustrations, examples of past successes, etc., that support equity and inclusion in all college messaging
- Conducting research on student ethnic identity and self-concept
- Making connections between student identities, interactions, and learning
- Works with homeless queer and trans-youth, drawing from the humanities-oriented social sciences to analyze and think with the narratives, testimonials, and social texts from youth on the street
- Examines the cultural and historical backgrounds of high school students
- Developing research identities and competencies from elementary school through career stages
- Tracing discourses of gender throughout institutions of higher education with a particular emphasis on how they mediate life chances for transgender students, faculty, and staff
- Conducting research on whiteness, white racism, “White Guys on Campus”
