Lynnette Brunderman is a Professor of Practice in Educational Policy Studies and Practice in the College of Education at the University of Arizona. Prior to joining the faculty at Arizona, Lynnette earned her doctorate at the University of Arizona while working as an elementary school principal with the Marana Unified School District. She was also active in providing professional development workshops for her own staff and other district employees. Prior to her 12 years as principal, Lynnette served as the Director of Student Services for the Miami Area Unified School District, coordinating all of the state and federal programs for the district. She taught for 15 years in a small economically-disadvantaged school district in Tucson, Arizona in both special education and elementary education. During that time, Lynnette served in leadership roles such as Career Ladder Chairperson and mentor teacher. Lynnette received her B.A. in Elementary Education and Special Education, Mental Retardation, her M.Ed. in Special Education, Learning Disabilities, and her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at the University of Arizona.
Dr. Brunderman collaborates with her colleagues on research that explores turnaround leadership in high poverty, low-achieving schools. Some of Lynnette’s recent work has centered on leadership development for Tier III schools in Arizona. Her interest in collaboration has also been a key aspect of recent work with other department faculty in examining leadership for school turnaround in a culturally diverse, changing demographic, and border context. Lynnette is recently associated with the International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP; see “Links” or Educational Policy Studies & Practice “Projects” for more information).
Dr. Brunderman strives to prepare future K-12 educational leaders with the necessary skills, dispositions, and theoretical perspectives to successfully lead in schools, both now and in the future. She stresses the role of instructional leadership and assessment literacy in meeting the needs of students and staff in a climate of continuous improvement.
Dr. Brunderman is also active in professional associations such as Arizona School Administrators-Higher Education Division, and serves on the board of the Marana Foundation for Educational Excellence. Lynnette networks with the Arizona Department of Education, and has recently been active on the AEPA Item Review Committee for the principal exam and served as facilitator for the Southern Arizona region for the Principal and Teacher Evaluation Summits.
