Preparation of Culturally Sustaining Leaders in Special Education Through Apprenticeship Learning
Our Commitment to Inclusive Education
Through a federal grant from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), we will support a cohort of scholars to obtain a Ph.D. in Special Education at the University of Arizona. The University of Arizona is a research-intensive land-grant Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in a culturally rich setting with shared borders and Indigenous influences, our program provides an exceptional learning environment.
Our grant-funded program will prepare the next generation of special education leaders who will drive the advancement of equitable and inclusive learning environments for children and youth with disabilities. We are committed to increasing diversity in the field of special education by inviting candidates from underrepresented groups, including multilingual and racially diverse scholars, as well as scholars with disabilities to apply.
Program Description: A Holistic Approach to Doctoral Education
Our program offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes a diverse range of courses from our department and college. We also provide four structured apprenticeship opportunities:
- High-Needs School Apprenticeship: This opportunity allows scholars to explore and promote culturally sustaining practices for diverse students with disabilities in high-needs schools.
- Program Director Apprenticeship: Scholars can gain experience in teacher preparation leadership through this apprenticeship.
- External Apprenticeship: Scholars have the chance to enhance their research skills, build connections, and expand their knowledge by engaging with other universities, centers, or policy organizations.
- Mentor Apprenticeship: External faculty members will provide guidance to nurture scholars' academic, social, and emotional well-being, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
