In March 2020, as the pandemic led to widespread isolation, the University of Arizona's Worlds of Words: Center of Global Literacies and Literatures (WOW) team was preparing to introduce a new literacy initiative in the Tucson, Arizona area named Salas de Libros. This initiative, inspired by the popular Mexican literacy program Salas de Lectura, aims to create "living rooms of books" - spaces where people of all ages can come together to delve into cultural identity and community through reading and literary activities. Thanks to the support from the Building a More Perfect Union grant, WOW, in collaboration with the Southern Arizona Writing Project, was able to revitalize this program, establishing 10 Salas de Libros across Tucson.
