Let us introduce you to Sarah Rose who graduated May 2020 in Elementary Bilingual Education. Sarah is now serving in the Peace Corps as a teacher in Costa Rica. Here’s what she has shared about her experience:
“I am now in Costa Rica where I am an Elementary English Teacher! I just got to my site on Saturday. My site is a small indigenous community in San Joaquin, Boruca, Puntarenas. There are only 7 students in the school, but I will be starting their English education program here. I will also be helping the high school students in San Joaquin who attend a high school in Boruca. Additionally, I will be teaching the teachers and principal at my school English along with the adults in the community.
San Joaquin only has about 10-12 families, making it a very calm and relaxed community. I can't wait to learn more about my community and share more about my experience!
Pre-service training was an intense three months, where I was able to learn more Spanish (I am now at an advanced low fluency), learn about the community and different cultures of Costa Rica, and also form stronger bonds with my peers/fellow volunteers and the Peace Corps staff.”
The University of Arizona ranks No. 15 among large schools on the Peace Corps' list of the top volunteer-producing colleges and universities between 2003 and 2023.
