Beyond Virtue Signaling: Exploring the Future of Allyship Alongside Queer and Trans Students

Despite best intentions, people wanting to be allied with the queer and trans communities often struggle with committing to something more than performative actions. In this session, Dr. Chase Catalano draws from empirical data to explore how and to what extent social justice educational interventions stop short of their transformative potential, and what we can all do to ensure we are moving the needle in the movement for queer and trans liberation.

Dr. D. Chase J. Catalano is an assistant professor of Higher Education at Virginia Tech. He served as an assistant professor for 4 years at Western Illinois University in the College Student Personnel Program for 4 years. Chase’s career in higher education began in student affairs and spanned numerous functional areas with his most recent role as the Director of the LGBT Resources Center at Syracuse University. As a trans scholar his research and scholarship address topics of trans(*)ness, social justice, queerness, and pedagogy/facilitation the context of higher education. He is a co-editor of Readings for Diversity and Social Justice, 4th edition (Routledge, 2018). Beyond his various book chapters, he published articles in Equity & Excellence in Education, Transgender Studies Quarterly (TSQ), and Journal for Diversity in Higher Education. He co-edited Advising & Supporting in Student Affairs (Charles C. Thomas Publisher, 2021) with Dr. Rachel Wagner.
