Dioniso de la Vina
Ph.D., University of Arizona

Dionisio de la Viña, born in Nicaragua, is the Director of Project CASS, a scholarship program, which brings approximately twenty educators from five Central American and Caribbean countries each year to LRC where these scholars complete an eleven-month-long professional development program. He is also a research specialist and an adjunct assistant professor at the Department of Language, Reading and Culture, College of Education, University of Arizona. He joined the teaching staff of LRC in 1995. Prior to that, from 1988-1995, he worked on M.A. and Ph.D degrees in Bilingual and Multicultural Education. In 1972 he received an M.A degree in Latin American Literature at Pacific Union College, California. He also did post-graduate work on the History of the Spanish Language at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. For a period of fifteen years, before turning his interest to the field of Education, he founded and managed Tucson Language Consultants. There he developed and taught occupational language courses designed for professionals such as lawyers, health practitioners, law enforcement agents, real estate agents, and others.

His current LRC courses include Language and Culture in Education and Bilingual Education Curriculum Development and Second Language Acquisition. He is also very interested in distance learning programs. Because he has a keen interest in life-long education, he has started an organization named RAICES. Raíces promotes the discussion of books and films by Latino authors and filmmakers in informal groups who meet at public library branches throughout the city of Tucson.
