Language, Reading & Culture

The mission of the Department of Language, Reading and Culture is to establish and support a scholarly community for the study of the teaching and learning of literacy and biliteracy in the educational context of cultural and linguistic diversity. We realize our mission through a unified commitment to exercise leadership in developing a knowledge base of theory, research and practice about language and literacy in the context of culture. Our mission is expressed through our work addressing:
  • Adolescent Literacy
  • Anthropology and Education
  • Bilingual Education and Biliteracy
  • Children's and Adolescent Literature
  • College and Adult Literacy
  • Diversity and Social Justice
  • Early Literacy and Family Literacy Studies
  • Educating English Language Learners
  • Educational and Applied Linguistics

  • Indigenous/American Indian Language & Education
  • Language Planning
  • Literacy Processes and Practices
  • Multimodal and New Literacies

Each of our programs has distinct requirements and offers opportunities for individualization with a wide range of courses, internships and research offerings. Programs must be developed in consultation with a faculty advisor. Once admitted, students are assigned an advisor who provides guidance on program requirements and may also serve as a mentor on specific projects. Students must meet with their officially designated advisor during their first semester of coursework and should maintain regular contact with the advisor throughout the course of their studies.
