Mission Statement

It is the mission of the UA-PE program to provide our students with a comprehensive physical education program, which will prepare our graduates to become successful physical education teachers upon completion of their academic program. Students will be provided a comprehensive physical education curriculum, utilizing the most current research and philosophies in the field of physical education, and will be given numerous practice opportunities with field based experience.
The Physical Education Teaching Major is for undergraduate students who desire a career in teaching elementary, middle or high school physical education.
To prepare for this major, freshman UA students should register in University College with a major in Pre-Physical Education (PRPE).
Applicants to the PE Teaching Major should demonstrate:
    A strong academic ability
A strong desire to enter the profession of teaching
A concern for the development and welfare of children
An appreciation of the range of human cultures
An understanding of lives of individuals with special needs
Students who demonstrate their experience and capability in these areas will be considered for admission. Those who do not fully demonstrate achievement in these areas will be advised on ways to improve their qualifications.

Overview of the Cohort Program

The UA physical education program is a 4-semester lock-step cohort model intended to start the first semester of the students Junior academic year. Each Fall semester a new cohort of 20-25 students will begin. Each student must be admitted into the Physical Education Program and College of Education prior to beginning the cohort. Students must also satisfy cohort prerequisite courses (PE 285/294a, PE 279, and PE 297a) with a grade of C or better prior to beginning the cohort. Upon completion of the Physical Education Program students will become K-12 certified as well as earn 48 units to be applied towards their undergraduate degree.
