Degrees & Programs

Master of Arts, M.A. Science Education Emphasis

This degree requires students to focus graduate course work in science, education and science education. Science Education Emphasis Strand: This strand focuses on the curriculum and the instruction of science in the classroom. Both core courses and science education courses are taken in the College of Education. At least 12 units comprising science content are taken in other appropriate colleges.

Admission

B.A./B.S. degree in education or a related field from an accredited four-year institution.

GPA of 3.0 figured on the last 60 units with defined exceptions on a provisional basis. Provisional admission may be made to applicants who meet all criteria, but fall between 2.5 and 3.0 in their GPA.

Fifteen units of previous coursework should be within preservice education.

Provisional admission may be granted to applicants who meet all other admission criteria, but have not completed 15 units of preservice education course work, with the provision that the coursework be completed within the first year of their M.A. program.

A student information form that includes an adequate writing sample.

One year of teaching in a full-time instructional position within a school setting. Student teaching can count as part of this required instructional experience.
Students may meet with an advisor in TTE to clarify exceptions about the above entrance requirements. Upon acceptance in the TTE program, the student should schedule a meeting with his or her assigned advisor to discuss the procedures within the program.

B.To enhance the Science Education Emphasis we recommend that the student take 3 units of coursework that represents the social, cultural, historical or philosophical aspects of the nature of science. Courses include:

C. To complete the Science Education Emphasis outside department requirements, an additional 15 units must be taken. These units must consist of at least 12 units of graduate science. All courses and a plan of study must be approved by a committee composed of at least a TTE and a science content advisor.

Supervised Field Experience (6 units)

TTE 593 Internship An internship is required of students who do not have at least 2 years of teaching experience by the completion of the M.A. degree. These units are beyond the minimal 33 required units.

Exit Options

(Discuss with your advisor before completing the M.A.)Thesis The thesis is a scholarly work that is completed with the guidance of a three-person committee. The process and procedures for the thesis should be discussed early in the M.A. program with an advisor.
Comprehensive Examination
The master's examination is comprised of two parts: Part I consists of four questions, two related to each of the department core courses. Students are required to respond to one question related to each course. Part II consists of two to four questions from the student's area of concentration that he or she identified when signing up for the examination. Students are required to respond to questions as determined by the faculty in the area of concentration. An oral examination over the elected topics may also be required.

Scholarly Article
The article topic, the final written paper and the refereed journal selected for submission must be approved by the student’s two-person committee. The student may be the only or the lead author of the article.

Portfolio
The portfolio represents the development of the student throughout the series of courses in the student’s program, and the in-depth reflections made by the student about teaching and teacher education. The contents of the portfolio, the monitoring of the development of the portfolio and the evaluation criteria of the portfolio must be predetermined and agreed upon by the student and the student’s two person committee.

University Laboratory/Course Revision
In connection with a faculty member from another department, and under the direction of a TTE advisor, the student will redesign some aspect of university instruction.

Community/school program
The M.A. student who elects to complete this requirement will work with one organization for a period of at least one semester and make substantial contributions to the program. M.A. students may work with any number of community or school programs, but their work must be in a school different from their own. For More Information Contact
