Future Students

College of Education students have opportunities to study teaching, leadership, counseling, psychology, higher education, education policy, and educational research. Our faculty and staff are eager to work with students who are just entering the field, as well as students who are seeking advanced degrees. Advising services for entry-level teachers are available through Student Services. Advising for advanced degrees is available from the appropriate department offices.

Teaching

Students in our undergraduate programs in early childhood, elementary education, cross categorical, and K-12 special education receive both a bachelor’s degree and an Arizona teaching certificate upon successful completion of university and state requirements. Our graduate secondary education program prepares teachers in a variety of disciplines. Our master's programs prepare teachers in secondary education, severe and multiple disabilities, visual impairment, deaf and hard of hearing, learning disabilities, and cross categorical - special education. In addition, our master’s and doctoral programs for experienced educators offer opportunities for continuing professional development and research in areas such as children’s literature, content-area instruction, teacher education, and special education. Please contact departments directly for information on graduate programs.

Educational Leadership

The Educational Leadership Program (EDL) offers on- and off-campus and distance-learning courses for graduate students seeking principal or superintendent certification or desiring to increase their skills and knowledge through research linked with practice in the field. The master's program offers certification through study of leadership literature and the experience of expert local scholars and practitioners. Students in the doctoral program engage in the study of social justice, systems thinking, change theory, educational policy, higher education, and postmodern discourse.

Counseling, Rehabilitation, and Educational Interpreting

The graduate programs in school psychology or school counseling lead to careers that help students discover and develop the personal skills and environmental support that facilitate academic success. For those interested in assisting individuals of all age groups who have physical, sensory or mental disabilities, we offer programs in rehabilitation services and rehabilitation counseling. For those interested in facilitating communication within academic settings for deaf and hard-of-hearing children, we offer a program in educational interpreting.
